As the daughter of Melodie Wilson Oldenburg, I have been watching the incredible impact of ABCD: After Breast Cancer Diagnosis for 11 years. The support from the staff, Boards and wonderful mentors make it possible for ABCD's free services to thrive as a means of support for anyone whose life has been touched by breast cancer. Mentors and participants gain reciprocally, and grow to be more comfortable talking about the disease, educating themselves on treatments and risks and also become empowered to share their experience with others. It is ABCD's firm belief that no one should experience breast cancer alone.

As a high school field hockey coach, I see the positive effect volunteering has on young people and how doing something for a cause can give it more meaning. Last season, the USM field hockey players and parents surprised me with a game dedicated to my mom, complete with pink uniforms and a pink game ball. Despite the cold, sideways rain and the goals blowing over during the game, all 35 girls were smiling and excited. They played with as much heart and spirit as I have ever seen.

With these ideas in mind, I have formed the The Stick it to Breast Cancer Field Hockey Tournament to give the sport of field hockey more recognition in Wisconsin, and to provide support and awareness for ABCD: After Breast Cancer Diagnosis.

Please join me on July 25 at Hart Park in support of field hockey and ABCD.
